Η K-Gold Temporary Gallery παρουσιάζει την έκθεση Sleeping with a tiger σε επιμέλεια του Νικόλα Βαμβουκλή στην Αγία Παρασκευή Λέσβου. Η έβδομη καθιερωμένη καλοκαιρινή διοργάνωση δανείζεται τον τίτλο της από το ομώνυμο έργο της Maria Lassnig που διερεύνησε την σωματικότητα μέσα από την παρατήρηση της φύσης.
Τα συλλογικά ουσιαστικά για ομάδες ζώων, όπως το ‘σμήνος μελισσών’ και η ‘αποικία μυρμηγκιών’ πρωτοεμφανίστηκαν στο Βιβλίο του Saint Albans, που γράφτηκε το 1486 από την Juliana Berners. Τα ποιητικά αυτά ονόματα βασίστηκαν στα μοναδικά χαρακτηριστικά του κάθε ζώου, ως προς τη συμπεριφορά, την εμφάνιση ή την τοποθεσία του και μαρτυρούν μια κοινωνική διάθεση από μέρους των ανθρώπων.
Η έκθεση επικεντρώνεται στη σχέση μεταξύ των κοινωνιών που δημιουργούν άνθρωποι και ζώα, εξετάζοντας τις δυναμικές που τις διακρίνουν: τη συνύπαρξη, την κυριαρχία και τον αποκλεισμό. Ξεκινώντας από τον ορισμό της λογικής και του ενστίκτου, οι συμμετέχοντες καλλιτέχνες διερευνούν τις συνδέσεις μεταξύ των ειδών, μέσω της ιστορίας, της πολιτικής, της ηθικής και της παράδοσης.
Η Λέσβος προσφέρει άφθονα σημεία εκκίνησης που υπογραμμίζουν αυτές τις παραλληλίες σε κοινωνικό, φυσικό και πολιτιστικό επίπεδο. Αποτελεί επίσης έναν από τους πιο δημοφιλείς προορισμούς birdwatching στη Μεσόγειο λόγω της διέλευσης αποδημητικών ειδών, όπως τα φλαμίνγκο. Ενόσω η προσφυγική κρίση εντείνεται, άνθρωποι και ζώα αποτυπώνονται στα όρια — συνόρων, περιοχών και καταστάσεων. Τι έννοια αποκτά η νομαδικότητα και των δυο υπό ένα κοινό πρίσμα; Τι μπορούν να μας καταδείξουν οι κοινωνίες των ζώων και ο τρόπος με τον οποίο αναπτύσσονται και συνυπάρχουν;
Οι αφηγήσεις που απαντώνται στην έκθεση αποκαλύπτουν πώς τα σημεία αναταραχής μπορούν να μετατραπούν σε εστίες για την επανεξέταση της παγιωμένης οπτικής μας για τον κόσμο και πώς η τέχνη μπορεί να αποτελέσει ένα ισχυρό εργαλείο για την ανάπτυξη ενός συμβιωτικού μέλλοντος.

Η Κ-Gold Temporary Gallery συνεργάζεται επίσης με το Hermitage Sykaminea για το πρόγραμμα “Απομόνωση και Μορφές Κοινότητας” του Andreas Sell. Οι δράσεις παρουσιάζονται δωρεάν και είναι ανοιχτές για όλους.
Ένας δίγλωσσος κατάλογος, σε επιμέλεια του Χρήστου Μούχα, θα εκδοθεί με συνεισφορές των Jean-Luc Nancy, Peter Cross, Phillip Warnell, Florence Fitzgerald-Allsopp και Nik Pantazopoulos.

Sleeping with a tiger

K-Gold Temporary Gallery presents “Sleeping with a tiger”, its seventh summer show in Lesvos, curated by Nicolas Vamvouklis. The exhibition’s title refers to the homonymous painting by Maria Lassnig who explored body awareness though her sensitive observations of nature.
Collective nouns for groups of animals (swarm of bees, colony of ants, parliament of owls etc.) first appeared in The Book of Saint Albans (1486) by Juliana Berners. These poetic names – based on animals’ behaviour, appearance, and location – reflect a certain societal disposition from humans towards them.
The exhibition focuses on the relationship between human and animal societies by looking at the dynamics of coexistence, dominance, and exclusion. Starting from the notions of reason and instinct, the participating artists explore possible interspecies connections through history, politics, ethics, and tradition.
The context of Lesvos highlights these parallels on social, natural, and cultural level. Besides a focal point of the humanitarian crisis, the island is considered one of the major birdwatching destinations in the Mediterranean due to the seasonal passage of migratory species like flamingos.
Humans and animals are depicted on the limits of borders, areas, and situations. What does the nomadic character of both have in common? What can we learn from the animal societies and the ways in which they develop and coexist?
The narratives in “Sleeping with a tiger” examine how places of turmoil can become hotbeds for revisiting our worldview and how art can be a powerful tool for developing a symbiotic future.

A Greek/English catalog, edited by Christos Mouchas, will be published with contributions by Jean-Luc Nancy, Peter Cross, Phillip Warnell, Florence Fitzgerald-Allsopp, and Nik Pantazopoulos.
